Sports Visit Visa

Sports Visit Visa

The UK Sports Visit Visa is designed for both amateur and professional athletes, sports teams, technical experts, support personnel, and sporting officials who intend to travel to the UK to participate in approved sporting activities for a duration of up to 6 months.

This visa falls under the Standard Visitor Visa category, a temporary route that allows foreign nationals to enter the UK for short-term stays, typically for tourism, business, or specific permitted activities.

It is important to note that the Sports Visit Visa does not provide a pathway to UK settlement. Each applicant must submit an individual application, even when travelling as part of a sports team or delegation.

Link and Day Lawyers are specialists in UK immigration law, offering clear and confident guidance at every stage. With a focus on precision and care, we support your journey from start to finish.

Visa National Requirement

A visa national is a person who, due to their nationality, must obtain a UK Visit Visa prior to entering the United Kingdom as a visitor. In most cases, visa nationals are required to secure their Visit Visa approval before commencing their journey to the UK.

The UK Home Office maintains an official list of nationalities that require a Visit Visa for entry as a visitor. However, this list also outlines specific exemptions, enabling certain visa nationals to apply for entry clearance as a visitor upon arrival, rather than obtaining a visa beforehand.

By contrast, non-visa nationals are generally permitted to seek entry to the UK as visitors upon arrival without applying for a visa in advance. Despite this, non-visa nationals must still satisfy all visitor entry requirements at the border. This means being prepared to clearly explain the purpose of their visit, demonstrate how they will fund their stay, confirm their accommodation arrangements, and provide proof of their return or onward travel plans.

EU citizens, as non-visa nationals, are currently allowed to enter the UK as visitors without a Visit Visa, provided they meet the standard entry requirements.

Visit Visa for Sportspersons

Sports Visit Visas are available to both amateur and professional sportspersons.  However, in common with other Visitor routes, Sports Visitors may not receive payment from a UK source for any activities undertaken in the UK.

If you are being employed as a professional sportsperson by a team based in the UK then the Sports Visit Visa is not an appropriate immigration route and you should apply for an International Sportsperson Visa instead.

The Home Office treats professional sportspersons who participate in professional domestic championships or leagues as employed, whether they are paid or unpaid.

Amateur sportspersons applying to join an amateur team or club to gain experience in a particular sport will need to satisfy the Home Office that they are genuinely an amateur joining a genuinely amateur team or club.

Personal and Technical Staff for Sports Visit Visa

At Link and Day Lawyers, we assist not only professional athletes but also their personal and technical staff in securing a UK Sports Visit Visa. Individuals who are employed to work for a sportsperson outside the UK and are travelling to accompany them at the same sporting event may also qualify for this visa route.

This category typically includes key support professionals such as coaches, physiotherapists, dieticians, bodyguards, press officers, and other essential personnel who play a vital role in the athlete’s performance and participation.

Permitted Activities Under a UK Sports Visit Visa

To qualify for a UK Sports Visit Visa, applicants must demonstrate to UK Visas & Immigration that their intention to enter the country aligns with the activities authorised under the visitor visa route. It is essential to prove that no restricted or prohibited activities will be undertaken during the stay.

Holders of a Sports Visit Visa are permitted to engage in specific sporting activities, which include:

  • Participating in sports tournaments or events, either as an individual athlete or as part of a professional or amateur team.

  • Attending promotional events or making personal appearances, where such engagements are connected to their sporting career.

  • Taking part in sports trials, provided that these trials are not held before a paying audience.

  • Undergoing short-term training sessions, as long as they are not employed or financially compensated by a UK-based sporting body.

  • Joining amateur sports teams or clubs, for the purpose of gaining experience, provided the applicant remains classified as an amateur in that particular sport.

As the Sports Visit Visa falls under the umbrella of the Standard Visitor visa route, individuals can also engage in activities permitted for Standard Visitors. This may include pre-arranged paid engagements, which must be scheduled before entering the UK and completed within 30 days of arrival.

Intention to Leave the UK Requirement for a Sports Visit Visa

When applying for a UK Sports Visit Visa, it is essential to demonstrate to the Home Office that your visit is genuine and strictly for a permitted sporting purpose. Beyond meeting the standard eligibility criteria, applicants must also prove that they have no intention of overstaying their visa. You must clearly show that you will leave the UK at the conclusion of your visit and that you do not intend to use successive or frequent visits to effectively live in the UK or treat it as your primary residence.

The Home Office evaluates each application on a case-by-case basis, carefully examining a variety of factors that establish your credibility as a genuine visitor. These considerations typically include:

  • Your previous immigration history, including past travel to the UK and other international destinations;

  • Your financial circumstances, together with your social, familial, and economic background;

  • Your personal, professional, and economic ties to your country of residence.

Applicants with limited or weak connections to their home country may raise concerns for the Home Office, particularly if there are strong family ties within the UK. Other red flags may include any previous attempts to mislead immigration authorities or inconsistencies between the information provided by you and that supplied by your sponsor.

To ensure a successful outcome, it is crucial to provide clear evidence of your ties to your home country, along with a well-documented itinerary that confirms the temporary nature of your visit.

Financial Requirements for a UK Sports Visit Visa

Applicants for a UK Sports Visit Visa must demonstrate access to adequate financial resources to cover all reasonable expenses associated with their trip. This includes the costs of travel, daily living (maintenance), and accommodation, without the need to undertake employment or rely on public funds during their stay.

All financial resources must be held in a recognised and approved financial institution, ensuring that the funds are verifiable and meet UK visa standards.

It is also permissible for a third party to cover the applicant’s expenses, provided the sponsor has a genuine professional or personal relationship with the visitor, is compliant with all UK immigration regulations, and can fully support the applicant throughout the duration of their stay.

English Language Requirement for a Sports Visit Visa

Applicants seeking a UK Sports Visit Visa are not required to meet any formal English language proficiency criteria. This visa category is designed for short-term visits, typically allowing athletes, coaches, and sports professionals to travel to the UK for specific sporting events, competitions, or related activities.

Since the purpose of the Sports Visit Visa is limited to temporary stays usually for less than six months the UK Home Office does not impose an English language test or demand proof of language ability as part of the application process. Instead, the focus remains on demonstrating the genuine intent to participate in approved sporting activities and providing evidence of onward travel plans and financial stability during the stay.

This exemption simplifies the application process, making it accessible to international sports professionals regardless of their English proficiency level.

Validity of a UK Sports Visit Visa

Individuals seeking to travel to the United Kingdom for sporting-related activities can apply for a Sports Visit Visa with a validity period of 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years, depending on their requirements.

During the visa’s validity period, holders are generally permitted to enter and exit the UK multiple times, provided the visa is not restricted to single or dual-entry conditions.

It is important to note that each stay in the UK must not exceed 6 months per visit, regardless of the overall duration of the visa’s validity.

Sports Visit Visa – Rules on Work and Payments

Holders of a UK Sports Visit Visa are not generally allowed to undertake employment in the UK or receive payments from a UK-based source for activities carried out during their stay, except in limited and clearly defined circumstances.

This restriction means that Sports Visitors cannot:

  • Take up paid or unpaid employment in the UK

  • Set up or operate a business as a self-employed individual

  • Work for any UK organisation or company

  • Undertake internships, work placements, or industrial training

  • Sell or provide goods or services directly within the UK

Permitted Activities under the Sports Visit Visa

As the Sports Visit Visa falls under the broader Standard Visitor Visa category, visitors are entitled to take part in other activities allowed under the Standard Visitor route. One key exception includes permitted paid engagements (PPEs), provided these engagements:

  • Are arranged before travelling to the UK

  • Are completed within 30 days of arrival

Remote Work Provisions

Sports Visitors may carry out remote work while in the UK, such as managing overseas employment or business tasks online. However, remote working must not be the primary reason for visiting the UK. The primary purpose of the visit should be to engage in permitted sports-related activities, rather than to work remotely.

Attending Job Interviews

Visitors with a Sports Visit Visa are allowed to attend job interviews or seek potential employment opportunities during their stay. However, if an offer of employment is secured, they are required to leave the UK and apply for the appropriate work visa or entry clearance before starting any employment.

UK Sports Visit Visa Fees

The current Home Office fee for a Sports Visit Visa covering a short stay of up to 6 months is set at £127.

For applicants requiring a longer-term Sports Visit Visa, the application fees vary depending on the visa’s validity period. The cost is £475 for a 2-year visa, £848 for a 5-year visa, and £1,059 for a 10-year visa.

These fees are payable directly to the Home Office at the time of application and are separate from any professional legal service charges associated with preparing and submitting the visa application.
