Study Visit Visa

Study Visit Visa

The UK Study Visit Visa is designed for individuals who wish to visit the United Kingdom for a short-term period of study, academic research, or an elective programme connected to a course of study outside the UK. This visa allows a stay of up to 6 months and is ideal for students or academics seeking to undertake temporary educational or research activities.

The Study Visit Visa falls under the Standard Visitor Visa category, which is intended for individuals visiting the UK for a temporary purpose not exceeding 6 months. It is important to note that this visa does not lead to permanent residency or settlement in the UK. Additionally, each applicant is required to submit a separate application, even when travelling as part of a group.

Link and Day Lawyers are specialists in UK immigration law, offering clear and confident guidance at every stage. With a focus on precision and care, we support your journey from start to finish.

Visa National Requirements

A visa national is an individual who, due to their nationality, is required to obtain a UK Visit Visa before entering the United Kingdom as a visitor. In most cases, visa nationals must secure a Visit Visa prior to their travel in order to gain lawful entry into the UK.

The UK Home Office maintains an official list of nationalities that are required to apply for a Visit Visa before travelling. However, this list contains specific exceptions, permitting certain visa nationals to enter the UK as visitors upon arrival, without prior visa approval, under defined circumstances.

In contrast, non-visa nationals typically have the privilege of seeking entry as visitors on arrival in the UK without needing to obtain a Visit Visa beforehand. Nevertheless, they must still satisfy all entry criteria, which means being prepared to explain the purpose of their visit, demonstrate how they will finance and arrange accommodation during their stay, and provide evidence of their intention to leave the UK, such as confirmed return travel plans.

Study Visit Visa – Permitted Activities

To obtain a UK Study Visit Visa, applicants must demonstrate to UK Visas & Immigration that their intention to enter the country aligns strictly with the activities allowed under the visitor visa route, and that they will refrain from engaging in any prohibited activities.

Holders of a Study Visit Visa are permitted to undertake the following activities:

  • Attend short-term study courses of up to six months at an accredited educational institution, provided it is not a state-funded school or academy (unless the course is undertaken remotely as part of a distance learning programme).

  • Participate in electives that complement an overseas course of study, for a maximum duration of six months.

  • Conduct research or receive research training (research tuition) at a recognised UK Higher Education Provider or research institute, for up to six months.

Since the Study Visit Visa is a sub-category of the UK Standard Visitor Visa, applicants may also participate in other activities allowed under the Standard Visitor route. This includes permitted paid engagements, provided these engagements are pre-arranged before travelling to the UK and are completed within 30 days of arrival.

Additional Eligibility Criteria for UK Study Visitors

Individuals intending to visit the UK for short-term study purposes must meet specific eligibility requirements to qualify for entry under a visitor route. To pursue studies in the UK, applicants must have secured admission to a course offered by an Accredited Educational Institution that is not a state-funded school or academy. The duration of the course must not exceed six months, unless it is being undertaken as a distance learning programme from outside the UK.

Electives Related to Overseas Study (Up to 6 Months)

Applicants who plan to visit the UK for up to six months to complete electives that complement their overseas studies must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Be 16 years of age or older;

  • Be officially enrolled in an overseas course equivalent to at least degree-level study in the UK;

  • Be pursuing a principal course in medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, midwifery, or dentistry;

  • Have obtained acceptance from a UK Higher Education Provider to undertake unpaid electives directly related to their field of study, ensuring no direct treatment of patients is involved; and

  • Provide written confirmation of acceptance from the UK Higher Education Provider.

Research and Research Tuition (Up to 6 Months)

Applicants seeking to visit the UK for the purpose of undertaking research activities or receiving research tuition for a period of up to six months must also meet specific eligibility conditions:

  • Be aged 16 or over;

  • Be enrolled in an overseas academic course equivalent to at least degree-level study in the UK;

  • Have received an offer from a UK Higher Education Provider to participate in research or research tuition;

  • Provide formal confirmation from their overseas institution that the research or tuition forms part of, or is directly relevant to, their enrolled course abroad; and

  • Not hold any employment within the UK institution during their stay.

Furthermore, research or research tuition may also be carried out at a UK research institute, provided there is a formal partnership agreement in place between the research institute and the UK Higher Education Provider.

Intention to Leave the UK Requirement for a Study Visit Visa

When applying for a UK Study Visit Visa, it is essential to convince the Home Office not only that your trip is for an approved and legitimate purpose, but also that you meet all additional eligibility criteria. A crucial requirement is demonstrating a clear intention to leave the UK once your visit concludes. Applicants must prove that they will not attempt to reside in the UK through prolonged stays, repeated visits, or by effectively making the UK their main place of residence.

To evaluate your intentions, the Home Office will examine various factors, such as:

  • Previous immigration history, including past visits to the UK or other international destinations;

  • Financial stability and the strength of your social, family, and economic ties in your home country;

  • Personal and economic connections that firmly anchor you to your country of residence.

Concerns may arise if you have limited family or financial ties to your home country, but maintain strong family connections in the UK. Other red flags include any previous attempts to mislead the Home Office during past visa applications or inconsistencies between your statements and those of your sponsor.

Study Visit Visa – Financial Requirements

Applicants for a Study Visit Visa must demonstrate access to sufficient financial resources to cover all anticipated expenses during their stay in the UK. This includes the full cost of travel, accommodation, and daily living expenses, ensuring that no employment or reliance on public funds will be necessary during the visit.

All funds must be held in a recognised and regulated financial institution, and evidence of these funds may be required to support the application.

In certain circumstances, a third party may provide financial support for the visitor. However, this is only acceptable if the sponsor has a genuine personal or professional relationship with the applicant, is not in breach of UK immigration laws, and can provide adequate support for the entire duration of the stay.

English Language Requirement for a Study Visit Visa

Applicants applying for a UK Study Visit Visa are not required to meet any formal English language proficiency criteria as part of their application. Unlike other visa categories, there is no obligation to demonstrate language skills through tests such as IELTS or other recognised assessments.

This exemption simplifies the application process for those travelling to the UK for short-term study purposes, ensuring that applicants can focus on meeting other core eligibility requirements, such as proving the purpose of their visit, financial stability, and onward travel plans.

Study Visit Visa – Validity and Duration of Stay

Individuals intending to travel to the UK for the purpose of a study visit can apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa with varying validity options of 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years, depending on their requirements.

During the validity of the visa, holders are generally permitted to enter and exit the UK multiple times, provided that the visa has not been issued with a restriction for single-entry or dual-entry only.

It is important to note that each stay in the UK must not exceed a maximum period of 6 months, regardless of the overall validity of the visa.

UK Study Visit Visa – Work Restrictions and Permitted Activities

Individuals entering the UK under a Study Visit Visa are generally prohibited from working or receiving payment from any UK-based source for activities undertaken during their stay, with very limited exceptions.

This restriction means that holders of a Study Visit Visa cannot:

  • Accept employment with any UK employer.

  • Establish, manage, or operate a business in the UK as a self-employed individual.

  • Undertake internships, work placements, or provide freelance services.

  • Offer or sell goods and services directly within the UK.

Activities Allowed Under the Study Visit Visa

As the Study Visit Visa falls under the broader Standard Visitor visa category, visa holders may engage in certain activities permitted within that route. For example, they may participate in pre-arranged paid engagements provided these are organised before travel to the UK and are completed within 30 days of arrival.

Remote Work While on a Study Visit Visa

Study visitors are allowed to carry out remote work while in the UK, but this must not be the main purpose of their visit. The primary reason for travelling to the UK must be to pursue a permitted study-related or visitor activity, not to work remotely for an overseas employer.

Job Searching and Interviews

Study Visit Visa holders may enter the UK to attend job interviews or explore employment opportunities. However, if they secure a job offer, they must leave the UK and apply for the appropriate work visa or entry clearance before commencing any employment.

Study Visit Visa Application Fees

The UK Home Office currently charges a fee of £127 for a Study Visit Visa covering a short stay of up to 6 months.

For applicants seeking a longer-term Study Visit Visa, the fees are structured based on the duration of validity:

  • 2-year Study Visit Visa£475

  • 5-year Study Visit Visa£848

  • 10-year Study Visit Visa£1,059

These fees apply directly to the visa application process and must be paid at the time of submission.
